Country report

Energy policy

The main aims of the Slovak energy policy are to decrease energy demand and increase security of energy supplies, based on the principles of maximising safety, reliability, quality and economic effectiveness. Annual gross electricity production in the Slovak Republic, as of 31 December 2015, was 27 191 GWh, of which 15 146 GWh (55.7%) came from the nuclear reactors Bohunice and Mochovce NPPs.

Fuel cycle developments

Design and development work for the use of nuclear fuel with higher enrichment and burnable absorber (gadolinium) at units 3 and 4 of the Bohunice NPP and units 1 and 2 of the Mochovce NPP were successfully completed, and during 2015, fresh nuclear fuel with an average enrichment 4.87% and 4.25% of U-235 was loaded into all four reactors.

At the end of 2015, the first delivery of enriched uranium product (EUP) was completed, under the contract between Slovenské Elektrárne and the French company Areva, which was signed in 2014. Supplied EUP is designed for fabrication of nuclear fuel, which will be delivered in 2016 to Bohunice unit 3 and Mochovce unit 1, under the fuel supply contract with the Russian company TVEL.

Status of Mochove units 3 and 4

In the 4th quarter of 2015, the new unit 3 control room began operating. The switching on of the unit 3 control room was preceded by the energisation of the entire distributed control system (DCS) power supply chain: from the external 110 kV line and the medium and low voltage distribution to the 24 V power supply. The Mochovce NPP also has a new emergency control room and a waste water treatment plant, used both by units 3 and 4.

Also on unit 3, conditions for clean assembly in the reactor hall were reached and control reactor assembly started together with renovation of internal reactor parts.

The nuclear project entered the testing and commissioning phase. Individual tests of the instrumentation and control (I&C) system have commenced.
